Requirements

Server hostname or IP address.

SSH port, usually 22.

Username plus password or private key.

Step-by-step connection guide

1

Choose SFTP Server

Open Add Cloud Connection and select SFTP Server.

2

Enter host and port

Add hostname or IP address and the SSH port. Use 22 unless your server uses a custom port.

3

Choose authentication

Select Password or Private key. Paste the key or browse for a key file when using key authentication.

4

Set start path

Optionally set a POSIX path such as /var/www so the pane opens in the right directory.

5

Test and save

Test the server login, then save the connection and start transfers.

Use SFTP safely and efficiently

Prefer key auth

SSH keys reduce password exposure and are easier to rotate per machine.

Use start path

A start path keeps users out of unrelated directories on shared servers.

Common connection issues

Authentication failed

Check username, key passphrase, server authorized_keys, and whether password login is disabled.

Connection timeout

Verify host, port, firewall rules, VPN, and whether SSH is reachable from your desktop.
